Garth

"Why didn't you come sooner?" I asked, subtlety pulling up my sock to hide my bruised leg.

Jessica looked at me with her pale blue eyes and pushed her glasses further up her nose.

Some people say people get more freckles in the summer, well, hers always stood out more in the winter months, when her skin turned paler. All around us, frost had coated the grass and the air was thin and misty. It was mid October, the perfect time to be playing football outdoors. It was freezing cold. I looked at Jessica again. She wasn't looking at me anymore. Instead she studied the bruise on my ankle.

"I'm sorry, I got a little sidetracked, is everything okay Garth?" she asked, as if it were obvious I'd been kicked in the shin.

"Fine, why wouldn't I be?" I mumbled, "You were supposed to meet me after football,"

She fiddled with her glasses again awkwardly. Sometimes it felt like there was this big empty space between us that wasn't quite full. You know when you're reading a book and let's says there's a blank page in the middle of a chapter. You have to turn two pages before continuing with the chapter and then you have to grab both pages and flip back to the last sentence to get back into the flow of things. well, this is pretty much a live version.

"I had to help mum with the groceries," she said "I didn't want to but it's kind of hard to say no to her, you know,"

I seriously had no idea. She stood up and stretched her legs.

"Fancy a kick about?"

I stared at her, bewildered,

"Schools closing soon," I said briefly as I looked at my watch. It was 16:05.

"So?" she said, "We can get out through the back of the field. We can jump over the hedge easy peasy.

'Easy peasy' it turned out to be. I had to go on my stomach and wrestle my way over the damn bush, twigs and all. Jessica manouverd herself over by sitting on top of the bush and swinging her legs over, making it look as if it really was 'easy peasy'. Man, I wish I'd done it that way. She was only a few centemetres taller than me.

I looked down. We both had a few grass stains scattered about our clothes. "Oh no," I groaned, "What's my mum going to say?" Jessica wasn't listening. She was kicking the ball around on the path outside the school. I tried to tackle her but, if you've ever seen me play, you'll know I'm rubbish at football. Goodness knows why I go to it every Wednesday. All that happens is that I miss a bunch of goals and get beaten about. For some stupid reason I kept playing and Jessica made sure I could barely even touch the ball. By the time we were done fooling around, it was almost dark.

"you coming over," she asked.

"sure, why not?" I said.

BE SURE TO WRITE WHAT YOU THINK OF THIS CHAPTER IN THE COMMENTS AND LET ME KNOW IF THERES ANYTHING I CAN DO TO IMPROVE MY STORY. I AM OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS.
