Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. Apple iPhone 5

A lot has been changed since Apple’s iPhone first emerged in 2007. Android-based smartphones flooded the market, each boasting its own unique features. Amidst the launch of smartphones comes a rivalry between two best technology companies. One is firing patent infringements and other trying to spit venom with their advertisements. With the unveiling of iPhone 5, we couldn’t control ourselves from comparing Apple’s baby to the current best smartphone crown holder, Samsung Galaxy S3. One is having its legacy of unique design and the other claiming to be “Designed for Humans.” While the Apple iPhone 5 price is much more than Samsung Galaxy S3, it doesn’t stop us in comparing two of these flagship phones.

Unveiled on May 3, Galaxy S3 is the new smartphone in “Samsung Galaxy S” series. Released well ahead of the Apple iPhone 5, this device runs on Google’s Android operating system and had the privilege of breaking the 10 million mark within two months of its launch. On the other side, like its predecessor, iPhone 5 was unveiled on 12th September in its traditional style, attracting huge media attention. Loaded with the next version of iOS, the device has some noticeable changes in its size. Pre-orders of this smartphone started September 14 and shipping initiated September 21.

From a distance the iPhone 5 looks similar to the iPhone 4S but a little closer look reveals the difference. The iPhone 5 has an aluminium metal casing and is 7.6mm thin. It is the thinnest iPhone ever made and Apple claimed it to be the thinnest of all the smartphones (which is not true of course). And in order to accomplish this, Apple claims that the iPhone 5 was designed from the scratch. Everything in the iPhone is either thinner or smaller, except for the device’s length, which is increased and now accommodates a completely new row of icons.

Although the length of the device has been increased, width is just the same as its predecessors and that makes it quite comfortable to hold. Even after the increase in length, use of thinner screen, aluminium body and the removal of rear glass make it weigh lighter than its previous version.

Samsung’s Galaxy S3 comes in ‘Marble White’, ‘Garnet Red’ and “Pebble Blue” colors with a plastic casing. Not only is the Galaxy S3 larger than the iPhone 5, thanks to the 4.8 inch screen, but it is also 13 mm wider than its rival. Its size may make it uncomfortable for some people depending on the size of their palm. At such a premium price, we wonder why Samsung finalized the use of a plastic body. Nonetheless, even after the use of the plastic, the device feels tough and looks beautiful.

Apple iPhone 5 – 4 inch IPS LCD, 1136 x 640 pixels, Gorilla Glass Protection.

Samsung Galaxy S3 – 4.8in Super AMOLED HD, 1280 x 720 pixels, Gorilla Glass Protection.

For the first time since its introduction in 2007, Apple has made a change to the screen size of its smartphone. So, this makes the device 4-inches rather than 3.5-inches populating 1136 x 640 pixels still holding onto its pixel density at 326 ppi. As always Apple is claiming their new device to be the best created in the category. Sir Jonathan Ive, Head of Hardware Design at Apple, attributed the change in size to ease of use, which was done considering all the factors giving a good feeling in hands since the width remained the same.

What the increase in the size means for a normal user? Well if you observe the screen, you’ll notice that an additional row of icons has been added. Apple also claims that the increase in size is ideal to watch the 16:9 HD videos and the applications can now make use of the extra space showing more content at once. But there is no special use of this extra screen real estate at the operating system level. They could have used it to show incoming notifications without overlaying them at top of the current application being used.

But whatever may be the reason for increasing the size, it was clearly evident that Apple’s iPhone was facing tough competition from the pay per install Android based devices which forced persistent Apple to increase the screen size.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 clearly is wider than the iPhone 5 and has a Super AMOLED panel, 4.8 inch display with 1280 x 720, which is identical to HTC One X in size. Quite large to hold the device is approximately 7.6cm across.

Processing Power

Apple iPhone 5 – Apple A6 Processor (Cortex A7s Architecture), PowerVR SGX543MP3 GPU, 1 GB RAM

Samsung Galaxy S3 – Quad-core 1.4GHz Exynos 4412 Cortex A9 Processor, Mali-400MP GPU, 1 GB RAM

Samsung Galaxy S3 is powered by an Exynos 4412 chip, which is a Quad Core 1.4 GHz. Samsung says the chipset will offer significant performance improvements in both processing and multimedia over its previous generation Exynos chip sets while consuming 20% less power.

Whereas, the Apple iPhone 5 has a new custom designed A6 chip which is twice as powerful as the A5 chip used in the iPhone 4S. The chip has a triple-core PowerVR SGX543MP3 GPU that helps it in giving fantastic gaming experience such as real-time back-view mirror reflections in the new version of Real Racing game specially designed for iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 – 4G LTE, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, Dual Band Wi-Fi b/g/n, 8 Pin Lightning Connector, Nano SIM

Samsung Galaxy S3 – HSDPA, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, Dual Band Wi-Fi b/g/n, Micro USB, Micro SD, Micro SIM

The new iPhone brings with it super-fast internet connectivity using the 4G LTE which gives faster Internet access compared to even Wi-Fi networks. One of the noticeable changes that the new iPhone 5 brings with it the 8 min connector rather than a 30 pin connector which served the iPhone for nearly 5 years. So the new phone is not compatible with the old docking accessories, but Apple does give an option to use an adapter to use older accessories and cables with new one.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a normal Micro USB port for charging and data transfer. It has 21 Mbps HSPA+ for Internet connectivity and even NFC for mobile payments. Samsung has put NFC to good use through Android Beam and S-Beam which can be used to transfer pictures and other stuff.

Apple iPhone 5 – 8MP, LED flash, Autofocus, Panorama, HDR, Full HD video recording, Sapphire Lens

Samsung Galaxy S3 – 8MP, LED flash Autofocus, Panorama, HDR, Full HD video recording, Zero Shutter Lag

The Apple iPhone 5 is equipped with an 8 Megapixel camera, iSight they say. The camera uses an LED flash with an f/2.4 aperture and a sensor offering backside illumination. Featuring the Panorama mode, just a tap and a pan is gives an image size that is 28 megapixels big.

The camera on the iPhone 5

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an 8-megapixel sensor and reams of features including image stabilisation, touch focus, 1080p video capture and an LED flash. However, its image quality is at best on-par with the iPhone 4S’s camera (and outperformed by it in some conditions) and we hope that the iPhone 5 will offer some significant improvements.

Apple claims its device delivers a full 8 hours of talk time and an amazing 40 hours of audio, but there is a surprise here, well the next time you take your iPhone 5; don’t forget to take your charging instrument as the battery isn’t detachable. Our Samsung counterpart is equipped with the latest Galaxy’s 2100 mAh battery, supplying required juice to millions of pixels. On the whole, both have just about similar battery life.

As both Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 have almost similar performance and features on every turf, the whole conclusion drops down to whether you like Apple’s closed beautiful garden or Android’s open ecosystem. But for the price to performance ratio, Samsung Galaxy S3 wins it for us.
