A Brief
Introduction.
I
have been fascinated by the world of the demonic and demonology for well over
two decades now as well as having the privilege and honour of being able to
study these subjects in great detail for well over a decade of that time.
During
the earliest years of my research, I found myself getting bogged down by a
recurring question and that was this; “Where did the term Demon in its modern
sense originate.”
It
is very easy to just assume origin and take these assumptions for granted, and
shame on me, for a while in my early researchers’ career, I made the cardinal
mistake of doing just that.
I
was indeed convinced of the origin of the term and as you will hopefully come
to see that common misconceptions and speculations have been allowed to
continue for too long leading scholars and researchers alike astray.
Now,
please do not accept this as a definitive answer to the question(s) posed
within this little piece of research, I by no means claim to have found the
holy grail of answers when it comes to the demonic, this is, as always, a
matter of perspective and an interpretation of the facts from my point of view.
There
will always be disagreements differing perspectives and so on and so forth,
maybe even branching out into dare I say it arguments, however I shall
endeavour to offer my opinion with tact and a respectful to the belief systems
of anyone mentioned herein.

The Demonic. I also wish to point out that the work contained within this paper

The Origins of
The Demonic.
Where
do we begin, well as a certain holy book stated...? In the beginning... that’s
right, straight out of the gate I have mentioned The Definitive Christian text,
The Bible. However, this book is actually predated by the term Demon by a few
thousand years although, you may not realise it.
Why
is this I hear you ask? Well, because the term demon didn’t actually exist
until around about the time of the Golden Age of the Greek Civilisation
approximately in the 4th - 5th Century B.C.E. although
there are some that state in accounts that it was roughly around the 7th
century B.C.E. but I digress.
The
Term demon has as many origin stories and Counties of origin as there are
opinions about it, this is why the question I posed earlier, here is a
reminder:
“Where did the term Demon Come From?”
Question asked by Booker, A.J., Circa 2005
…
Such a hard question to answer. It takes dedication and a passion for research
to attempt to answer this and no small amount of tenacity.
It
is here that we can start the quest for the origin of the word demonic, however
to gain some insight into what the word actually pertains to we have to go back
in history even further in time to what is Arguably, I might add, considered
the prehistoric first civilization The Proto-Indo-European Culture.
Now
why would we need to go back that far if we have already determined the origin
of the word Demon? Bear with me this train of thought tends to be a slow and
bumpy ride, but it is worthwhile when we come to the terminus.
Firstly,
we need to understand a little bit of history about Mankind and their belief
systems before we can delve into the juicy world of the Demonic that being said
we need to look into the world of Philosophy, Theology, Culture and history as
well as a little Psychology in an attempt to not only try to understand the
human condition from a primitive perspective and mindset but to also be able to
give that perspective some relevance to the question and connection to the
unexplained.
In
doing so we can create a strong foundation to support what as you may now have
come to realise is a monumental task and not just the simple act of answering
that naïve young man's question.
The
People of the Proto-Indo-European civilization were in essence no more than
small tribes of individuals that formed a community that stretched through two
or possibly even three continents and their language is reportedly said to be
the basis or the Great and Grandparent languages of Europe, the Baltic regions
as well as the sub-Asian continent and even through into Mesopotamia and
Persia.
Sadly,
this is only speculation as these tribes of peoples lived before writing and
recordkeeping so little to no evidence has been documented. This is where the
etymology experts come in. A group of scholars have been able to use a method
of backward engineering and comparison techniques to be able to create a
theoretical framework that is suggested to be the closest ever version of the
Archaic language we are ever likely to be able to see, or more precisely hear.
Remembering
the tribal and nomadic nature of the people’s that made up the collective known
as the P.I.E.’s this is thought to have been the origins for different dialects
to spring up and create the basis of new and ever evolving languages. Possibly
even being a supposed forerunning for languages such as Sanskrit, Early Latin
and Baltic based languages.
Why
again, I hear you all ask do we need to know this, if we have already
determined that demon is a greek word.
Well,
I answer you, the term may have evolved from a Greek work but here is where the
evolution of my original question comes into play. If these peoples had the
concept of language and spirituality, Positive and Negative then it goes
without saying that demons would have existed. No? If you answered yes to that
question however then I commend your curiosity and pose this question to you:
“What where demons called before the word demon was
created?”
Question asked by: Booker, A.J., Circa 2021.
This
is why we need to look into the other fields of religion, Philosophy, History,
Etymology, Theology etc.
It
is by understanding what came before can we truly only hope to understand the
evolution of things, their names, their being and a host of other
characteristics.
The Prehistoric Peoples of the Proto-Indo-European Civilizations Religious and Spiritual Beliefs Part 1:
The peoples of the stone age and early Neolithic humanity held
in great reverence the Celestial and the Natural world and as such this formed
the basis for the developing notion of spiritual and religious beliefs as well
as being able to provide some form of answers to and for the unexplained and
supernatural phenomena that presented themselves to this early form of humanity
and Fledgling civilization.
These seemingly monumental in power primordial forces of the
Celestial and Natural worlds, that had an impact on the very land, sea, air,
skies, food waters and even upon life itself ushered in a new dawn of early
Stoneage and Neolithic peoples worshipping these controlling primordial forces
as Deities, Gods and Goddesses commanding these events from up high controlling
events that were in essences to broad for the primitive mind and developed mind
I hasten to add to comprehend. We can't blame all of the misfortunes on a
primitive mind now can we.
Let's jump a little further ahead into the developed P.I.E.’s
civilization and take a look at some of the Primordial deities that within the
pantheon.
As you would expect there were deities that ruled the sea, the
stars the moon and the sun and these were all hierarchical in nature as you
would expect in a pantheon these deities would be ruled over by a chief deity
or creator God. A concept that later on in history as these tribes found
themselves spreading into far and distant lands such as The Middle-East,
Africa, India and up into the Balken States and beyond would shape the
developing religions of the civilizations to come all of the way to the point
in history when Monotheism took prevalence thousands of years later.
Now all of this is very interesting I here you say, yet again I
feel that you are asking me “Where do demons fit into this?”, “What and where
are you going with this fascinating jaunt into the world of Archaeological
Academia?”
Well, my good people, here we come. The answer to your questions
and it is a doozy.
They have been right here alongside us throughout this entire
paper...
Yes, that’s correct, they have been right under our noses since
we began. You see, the term demon didn’t really exist in terms that today, we
would associate it with.
Demons, in the eyes of the ancients and if truth be told myself
in some respects, deities. Well at least the higher-ranking ones anyway but
more of that later.
In the eyes and minds of
the ancients Gods and Demons were actually, one and the same. They were both
considered supernatural beings in appearance they both held sway over the fates
or the lives of the mortals that were in existence and believe it or not they
both were more or less mostly benevolent, although as you will discover later
on as we progress through this series that this was not actually always the
case.
Over time as mankind evolved and civilizations came and went,
empires rose and fell, so too did the evolution of these supreme beings and the
distinction between the two became more and more defined.
As events unfolded and Natural disasters became more prevalent
civilisations more frequently explained the unexplainable as wrathful
repercussions of the people displeasing the omnipotent supreme beings that they
worshipped. And the first look at the demonic began to take place.
Over time as with most perceived as evil or malevolent their
celestial powers and standings became diminished as more heroic Gods smote and
cast them out of their celestial paradise.
In essence again, it is the oldest running and first smear
campaign to be invented.
Here is where another question arises, one that we shall at
least attempt to answer later on in the series but I feel we should at least
broach now for good measure and that is the question.
“Was it man that created and twisted the history and
nature of these once deified beings to explain the unexplained behaviour of
mankind or is it mankind that was tainted and twisted by the Demonic?”
After all it is said that one man’s God is another Man’s Devil.
Now we find ourselves coming to a close for this chapter my
friends, I do hope that you have enjoyed the time we have spent together.
We are going to skip ahead now from the earliest civilizations
to slightly more modern ones, well in archaeological terms more modern I
suppose. We have finally nearing the terminus of today's journey landing at the
word demon.
We now skip forward to the ancient and mysterious times of the
Sumerian and Akkadian and this is where we start to see truly interesting
developments.
As we have mentioned previously The Gods and Goddesses of the
Primordial world evolved into the Ancient and were in most cases benevolent,
however were not above petty vengeance when the mood took them and when it came
to one another and interactions and truly if to be believed in epic
proportions.
Stories evolved of how The Gods and Goddesses plotted to over
throw one another, manipulate or seduce for gain of beneficial treatment and in
some cases killing one another to benefit themselves.
This is where that question I asks a moment ago comes back into
play a little did the gods look down on the freedoms of the mortals and become
influenced by mankind's corrupt nature and behaviour corrupting them and
lessening their divine purpose or did mankind learn these behaviours from their
creators and as such their tutelage gained them punishment from the higher
order of deities?
As a result, it was seen that through the influence of these
lesser deities' mankind became more adept in the fields of deceit, violence and
sexual divine and as a consequence we continued to blame these beings, twisting
them and corrupting them further from who they once were to the demonic and
vilified in an attempt to absolve mankind of its perpetual fall from the path
of righteousness.
This is where in my opinion, the Birth of The Demonic Began.
Now we have discovered in brief, a possible origin of the
demonic let us have a look at the word Demon.
Demon/Daemon/Daimon are all basically evolutionary stages of the
word we use today to describe negative entities that are demonic in nature.
Daemon is by far the oldest spelling of the word, at least that
I can find in terms of Ancient Language translated into modern terminology.
The word Diamon comes from the classic Greek and is said that a
daemon/daimon(s) have no particular allegiance to good or evil but are terms to
rather, help define the beings' characteristics or personality traits.
The term Daimon in Greek religious terms refer to a supernatural
power. Daimon and Theos (The classical Greek Term used for God) are used
interchangeably in the respects of classification purposes.
The term Theos is used to describe and represent the
supernatural being's personality and the term Daimon is used to define and
represent the supernatural beings sudden and unexpected activity.
So, it is in a sense therefore we use the term Daimon to explain
a sudden and unexpected supernatural intervention that isn’t always associated
with a specific deity, but has an effect on a mortal's fate.
As the golden age of Greece passed and a more oppressive nature
took a hold of the civilization so did the spiritual beliefs surrounding the
demonic and the dead.
The dead in essence became almost daimonic in nature. This in
turn lead to scholars of the time speculating as to the origins of these beings
and their unexplained intentions and identities.
They Envisaged lesser deities or a lower order of celestial
being possibly mortal or part mortal however almost always superior to humanity
in every way shape and form.
Later on, as time passed in the 8th century, we see
taken from Medieval Latin the appearance of the word ‘Demon’
TO BE CONTINUED...
This is where my friends we are going to part ways for now.
Instalment number II is in the works and will be ready as soon
as I can put pen to paper. Or fingers to keyboard.
IT IS WITH GREAT APPRICIATION I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE GOOD
PEOPLE OF PUBLIXX PUBLISHING FOR PUBLISHING THIS AND HOPE THAT YOU FIND IT USEFUL
IN YOUR RESEARCH.
HAPPY RESEARCHING MY FRIENDS.
