Turn your life into a novel

You decide that it's time to write. What you want to create is a novel, but you do not know well about what. Until you realize that your life itself is a story to tell, and that it may be simple and useful to write about it.

This is usually common in writers who are getting started. However, first you have to define how to do it the right way.

The main thing is to define if what you want to tell are memories of your life, or a autobiography as a novel. Memories are anecdotes that you have experienced in the past, and don't need to have a chronological order or connection with one another. While an autobiography is like any fiction novel, but based on the course of your life or in a specific moment in particular. However, this one needs to have an order, a sense and a clear objective about what you want to convey. The autobiography is one that has an approach, a knot and an outcome.

Before you start writing your autobiography you have to define what do you want to tell? We know that it is your story, and that you will have different experiences and learnings, but there must be a main idea, something that you can summarize in a sentence. Maybe some of these questions can help you identify it: What do I want my readers to learn with my story? What teachings do I want to spread?

Biographies often contain many feelings, which makes them emotional and inspiring at the same time. "The Diary of Anne Frank" is a clear example. Here we can read (and not just read, but live) the life of this little Jewish girl in the middle of the Second World War and learn about everything she went through while hiding from the Nazis.

Another important point to keep in mind, is that you should not tell everything. Just like when you write the story of someone or some important event (journalists know a lot about this) you can not write all the details because the story becomes boring. The same with your biography. You must add what really contributes to your main idea.

The structure is fundamental. You must present a conflict, which is presented in the statement, which then gets complicated in the knot and then resolved in the outcome. And even though you are writing about your experiences it is better to think the story as if it were someone else's. In this way you can be more objective about how to tell it, what facts to change, or what to subtract or omit. Do not forget that the novel must be understood and interesting for our readers.

Although the story is about your real life and is a recount of your experiences, this does not mean that you can not recreate certain scenes or exaggerate others or even invent new ones. Sometimes you choose to do it simply because you do not remember certain moments accurately or to generate more interest.

It is vital, too, that you have characters. Which in this case will be the people of your life. It would be
a good idea to talk to them and include their opinions, dialogues, memories. By doing that your novel will be more complete and, at the same time, interesting.

In conclusion, writing your life as a novel is a great job and always a good idea, but to create successful story you must follow certain guidelines that can catapult it. Everyone has a story to tell, but not everyone knows how to tell it.

PS: At this moment, within the Authors Cup, we have a 'Cup Challenge' that is precisely about writing a story about your life. If you want to know more about it, enter here. The challenge is called The Personal Writer.
