I have two broken wings, but still, I try to fly. If you watch me, it doesn’t look like actual flying, it’s more like hopping extremely high. Chickens are wowed. Penguins too! But the birds that can actually do flying, they don’t even know I exist, because it’s natural to seldom look down when you’re up in the air. My wings will never mend. I know I’ll never soar. But there’s great beauty in the flight of others, and I’m glad I have two good eyes to see it.

Viajábamos en un bus interprovincial y ahí la conocí. –En Oxapampa las pistas no son asfaltadas –dijo Zoe–. Usamos motos. –¿Tú tienes una moto? –pregunté. –Claro. Te llevaré a conocer los lugares turísticos. Llegando a la estación me mostró dónde quedaba el hotel y quedamos en encontrarnos a las tres en la plaza de armas. Cuando apareció en su moto dijo –¡Sube! Y tómame de la cintura. No te vayas a caer. Recorríamos las pistas no asfaltadas, y cada kilómetro, me iba enamorando más.

En una noche bien oscura, alcé la vista hacia el cielo, y pude ver la infinidad de estrellas que nos rodea—a cada uno de esos solitarios puntos luminosos separados el uno del otro y de nosotros. Comencé a sentir tristeza. Hasta que me di cuenta de que ninguna estaba separada en realidad. Cada una de esas radiantes joyas en el cielo, había sido cuidadosamente cosida, a la gran tela negra que es el espacio. Nadie estaba solo. Todos estábamos unidos por la tela. Caminé de regreso a casa, contento.

Cuando te conocí, nunca habías visto el mar. Yo te llevé. Ni bebido una Margarita. Yo te la preparé. O besado apasionadamente bajo la lluvia. Fui yo quien cerró nuestros paraguas. Pensabas que el amor “para siempre” tan sólo duraba 2 horas, en las películas. Y sin embargo, hasta hoy te sigo amando.

I’ve been an artist for countless lives, and in each one of them, I’ve taken my own life. I keep coming back, though. Why, I do not know. Apparently, there’s something I still need to paint, and I haven’t. Maybe this time around.

Salté del avión. Mis dos paracaídas habían sido mal envueltos, y fallaron. Primero no quise creerlo. Luego grité con rabia y odié al mundo y entendí que ninguna oración o plegaria me iba a salvar. Mientras seguía cayendo, la tristeza más grande que ya sentí me cubrió como un manto oscuro tejido de plomo. ¡Hasta que sucedió! De repente, pude ver toda la belleza que posee la tierra que sólo se puede ver desde los aires. Disfruté el momento. Me sentía tranquilo. Estaba alegre. Estaba en paz.

I could’ve been an army medic, and helped save dying lives. A firefighter, carrying people out of hellish buildings before they collapsed. A selfless lifeguard. A paramedic. A man who knows CPR. I just didn’t have what it takes. Today, I helped an old lady bring down her scared cat from a tree. For a very short while, I felt good about myself.

Por la noche, antes de dormir, el niño le dijo al padre: Papá, tengo miedo. ¿Y si mañana…no me despierto? Hijo, dormir es tan agradable, dijo el padre. Si por alguna razón eso sucede, entonces, tan sólo sigue durmiendo. Estarás bien.

Me gustaría gritarle a los vientos poesías sublimes sobre cuánto te amo. Pero mi vocabulario es limitado. Así que te lo digo de la única forma que sé: Te amo mucho.

Los pájaros tienen suerte. Pueden volar. Y siempre encuentran semillas y agua.
