Once a cherry tree did grow,
Sweet its' blossom bloom,
A lake like glass lay still below,
A lake of swans, not loons,
How sweet the fragrance of the tree,
While love below it danced,
Love, a swan, in purest dream,
Had left life in a trance,
The days were long and lofty,
A swan perched on the high,
Below a loon crooned softly,
A broken lullaby,
"O trickery, Affection!"
The sky began to weep,
"O Love, you cruel deception!"
The tears of rain did sweep,
The melody grows stronger,
The song begins to cry,
O Joy, be mine no longer,
Like swans take to the sky,
Swans, their luscious glamour,
Bathed in milky light,
Swans, their proud demeanor,
Turn into loons o'ernight,
Beauty is deception,
Fleeting faster still,
Love is not affection,
Hewn deeper than it will,
Once upon a summer dream,
A cherry tree did grow,
Until the winter came, it seems,
And laid the earth with snow,
Sweet Spring, the fragrant promise,
Renewal, fair and pure,
Has come, a faithful tonic,
Of hope, so tried and sure,
But where that cherry tree once stood,
Bare branches laid to waste,
A trying symbol of what should
Had been a fruitful taste,
And as I walked where once was life,
A single petal fell,
A bitter sight of hateful loss,
Now in my hands was held,
"Love, you fateful Killer!"
A loon sang on the bay,
"And I, your victim, Tiller
of the barren ground laid waste,
"Where should have been a birdsong,
In tree branches so high,
Instead is quiet weeping,
Heartbreaking lullaby,"
Love lays waste if not tried true,
Innocence will kill,
Love is not a carefree game,
And it never will,
Yet once, a cherry tree did grow,
Sweet its' blossom bloom,
A lake like glass lay still below,
Where once were swans, now loons.
