Prologue

"I want to tell you a story..." He said, smiling down at the young girl whose innocent mind was yet to be corrupted by the evil creatures that lurked around her town. "About a girl named Sage."

"That's me." She smiled at him, and he nodded, smiling almost condescendingly at the girl.

"That's right. That's you." He said, "Now, this is about the girl, who's going to grow up, and break everyone's heart."

"Everyone's?" She interrupted his story again, frowning as she did so.

He nodded again, "Everyone's.

"Why will I do that?"

He stroked her cheek with his thumb and then patted her on the head, "It's just in your nature, Sage. You won't be able to help it."

"Tell me you're fucking joking." He scoffed out, holding a ripped up piece of paper in his hand which had scribbled words of apology rushed into it, "A note, Sage? A fucking note?!" He yelled out, and it was one of the first time she had ever heard him shout, and it made her grin that she had had such an effect over him.

"Would you rather I had left no note?" She cocked her head to the side condescendingly, raising her left eyebrow after a few seconds of his hesitant reply.

"I'd rather you told me face to face." He said, and then shook his head, "Actually, I'd rather you didn't leave at all."

"We both knew I would be leaving at some point."

"Yeah, at first." He shrugged his shoulders dramatically, "We've been living together for months now, Sage. I was even-" he sighed, cutting off his next words.

"You were even what?" She asked, sounding bored.

He looked at her and clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth, "I was even going to ask you to marry me."

She raised her eyebrows in slight surprise, "Oh." She nearly burst out laughing. The pair had only known each other a few years, when she moved outfrom home during her high school career. Her Father believed that she was staying with distant relatives in New York. But little did he know, those relatives hadn't seen her in the few years that she'd been staying in the city.

"Yeah. Oh."

"Oops." She mumbled.

"Fuck." He scoffed, a humour filled grin on his face, even though he didn't find anything funny at all, "Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why are you leaving? Why right now? Why couldn't you wait until dinner so we could talk about this like read adults-"

"I don't know if you're forgetting this but I'm not even eighteen, Jared." She giggled out, shaking her head in disbelief, "I need to go home and go back to school and live my life-"

"Why? You already missed your first few weeks of school, so why?"

She rolled her eyes, "Because believe it or not, I have a life that extends further than New York City."

"You said you loved it here."

"And I did." She nodded, smiling, "I do."

"So why?"

"I miss my brother." She shrugged.

"You said you hated your brother-"

"Don't." Her tone dropped drastically with one word, "Don't lie, Jared. We both know that I've never said a bad word about Stiles, so don't."

He sighed and closed his eyes, "I love you, Sage."

She pulled her suitcase so that it was stood right beside her, and she shrugged her shoulders, "That's quite unfortunate for you." She told him, as she starting pulling her case to the front door.

She didn't even look back when he called her name, she just continued walking with a small smirk on her face, and Peter Hale's words replaying in her mind.

"You're going to break everyone's heart, Sage. And the chaos you're going to cause is going to

be fantastic."
