The weak sunshine struggled to reach the old, crumbling fishing pier as the biting wind whipped sand into the air. A seabird lay injured on the wooden planks, its wings torn and battered, its breathing panicky and pained. As the grizzled fisherman cast his line and pondered past regrets, he wondered how he could help. But then he simply sighed and stared out over the churning waves. It was too late.
